Looking Back, Looking Ahead

Looking Back
Last semester the 11 student groups and other dedicated individuals that make up FRN gave new meaning to the word "awesome." Besides donating over 14,000 meals and putting in close to 1,000 volunteer hours, FRN at UMD also....
  • officially became a student group
  • connected with two new shelters
  • submitted about five grant applications
  • recruited five new members to our Leadership Team
  • brought on eight new student groups to make a total of 11 active groups
  • recruited a waiting list of 13 interested groups
  • began recovering Mon-Fri at South Campus Diner, 251 North, and Panda Express in the food court
  • began recovering all home football and basketball games
  • explored expansion to North Campus Diner, Hillel, Frat Row, and Rt. 1 restaurants
  • launched www.foodrecoverynetwork.org
  • ordered and distributed close to 100 shirts and hoodies
  • submitted a policy proposal to the Roosevelt Institute's 10 ideas journal
  • got both SGA and RHS to pass resolutions supporting FRN
  • helped students at Brown University start an FRN at Brown chapter that is successfully recovering food each week
  • had phone calls with students from about 10 other colleges interested in starting chapters
  • became a nonprofit in Maryland
  • brought on distinguished faculty Professor Grimm as a board member
  • was profited three news articles
  • threw an awesome Holiday Celebration Dinner with 50 volunteers to celebrate our successful semester
  • launched a Facebook page and a twitter account
  • made a display case
  • set up Group Spaces account to manage volunteers
Congratulations on such a productive semester everyone!

Looking Ahead
Now, this semester we're excited to work to meet our three major goals:
  1. 15,000 meals recovered
  2. Pilot the transition to reusable trays
  3. Start two new chapters at other schools
Keep checking in for updates on these goals, and hope the semester has gone off to a great start for everyone!
