Leadership Team

Mia Zavalij, Co-President, Co-Founder

Born in Ukraine, raised in upstate New York, Mia Zavalij went to Sherwood High School in Maryland. In high school she was very involved in athletics, especially senior year when she was captain of her varsity field hockey team. She is currently a senior Environmental Science and Policy major and is applying for anthropology as her second major. Mia became involved with several student groups her sophomore year and is currently the secretary of The Love Movement and heading the sustainability committee for CHUM (Co-op Housing University of Maryland). As treasurer she hopes to raise and manage enough funds in order to support the Food Recovery Network in the future, and is really excited to continue expansion and donate even more food to those who are in need.

Cam Pascual, Co-President

Cam Pascual is a junior double major in Global Inequality and Biology at the University of Maryland. Cam was raised in University Park and later moved to Silver Spring, attending Richard Montgomery High School where she received her International Baccalaureate diploma. Currently, Cam works as a Program Coordinator for Health Leads, a national nonprofit organization that works to connect low-income families to resources typically regarding job placement and food in addition to helping families apply for welfare programs. As the FRN co-president, Cam seeks to promote visibility of food waste locally and nationally,  and encourage community involvement in reducing the number of food insecure people around the DC area.

Andrew Bresee, New Chapter Coordinator Advisor

Andrew was born and raised in Silver Spring MD, and went to school locally as well. Originally, Andrew went to a private high school that was sheltered but encouraged activism and environmental sustainability. After two years, Andrew transferred to Wheaton high school, where he was involved with Volleyball, Swimming, NHS, and The Green Club. In college Andrew switched majors twice, going from Astrophysics to Psychology and finally to Environmental Science and Technology. In addition to being on the leadership team of FRN, Andrew also participates in Phi Sigma Pi, a coed honors fraternity, the Grilling Club and the Terrapin Trail Club.

Meghan Scarry, New Chapter Coordinator

Meghan is a senior double majoring in Operations Management and Supply Chain Management at the University of College Park. She was born in Connecticut and raised in New Jersey, but currently lives in College Park, Maryland. Since living in College Park, Meghan has been extremely active in Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity, where she organized a school supply drive that resulted in over 600 school supplies that were donated to children both locally in DC and internationally. Meghan is currently the VP of Operations and loves this program due to its simplistic execution but tremendous impact. Meghan is very excited about this opportunity and believes FRN has the potential to spread to other college campuses, creating a strong network of colleges that will educate their peers on the issue and help solve the problem of hunger in the DC area.

Connie Chou, Sports Game Coordinator

Connie is a second year double major in Marketing and Supply Chain Management with a Chinese language minor at the University of Maryland, College Park. Raised in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, Connie is proud to call herself a Ramapo High School Raider, where she spent the majority of her time on stage with the drama club and in the pool with the swim team. At the University of Maryland, Connie serves as Co-Fundraising Chair for the Club Swim team and Orientation Mentor for the Smith School Freshman Fellows Program. Connie first heard of the Food Recovery Network through her Scholars program, and is thrilled to now be a part of the leadership team. As sports game coordinator, she hopes to reach out to new student organizations and spark interest in new volunteers. Connie is amazed at how much Food Recovery Network has accomplished and can’t wait to see how far its initiative will spread.

David Kramer, Director of Public Relations

David Kramer is a junior Psychology and Criminology double major at the University of Maryland. He is from Brookline, Massachusetts, where he helped create the first Teen Center in the town. In addition to his work with the Food Recovery Network, he is currently the Co-Vice President of The Love Movement, is a Tribal Affairs intern with the United States Department of Justice, and a frequent volunteer at the Maryland Food Co-Op. He is thrilled to be joining the FRN Leadership Team this year, and is looking forward to helping the organization grow further.

Ben Simon, Co-Founder, Advisor

Ben is a senior Government and Politics major at the University of Maryland College Park. He was born in D.C. and raised in Silver Spring, where he still lives. At Blair High School, Ben united students from 10 MoCo high schools to successfully divest the Montgomery County MCERS pension fund and the M-NCPPC pension fund from companies with operations supporting the Genocide in Darfur. After serving as Genocide Intervention Network's College Divestment Coordinator his freshman year, he managed a team of 21 interns at Search for Common Ground, where he was introduced to social entrepreneurship. In 2010, Ben co-founded and was the first president of The Love Movement and is currently the Founder and President of MyMaryland.net and an opinion columnist for The Diamondback. Ben is extremely excited about this opportunity to lead FRN as it continues to donate food from UMD to those in need and envisions exporting FRN to several other campuses in the DC area and establishing it as a reputable 501(c)(3).
